Challenge foods

The BAT 2 Study challenge foods are supplied by the study and prepared by the dietitian. However you may be asked to bring some ingredients or previously eaten products to combine with the allergen. The dietitian will give you a call a few days before your visit to discuss the challenge foods. Please remember to let us know about any additional allergies or intolerances your child may have.

The Challenge Foods

Baked milk and baked egg challenges: vanilla cookies for both the blinded and open doses

Fresh milk challenge*: cow’s milk made into a strawberry, banana or chocolate milkshake for both the blinded and open doses for children older than 12 months of age. Plain cow’s milk with or without flavourings is offered to those under 12 months of age

Loosely cooked egg challenge*: pureed boiled egg ‘hidden’ in fruit puree for the blinded doses. The open dose for children older than 12 months of age is scrambled egg. For those younger than 12 months of age boiled egg is pureed and added to a previously eaten food e.g. fruit puree

Sesame challenge: sesame oat cookies are offered for the blinded doses. The open dose is tahini pasteĀ (sesame paste) combined with a previously eaten food e.g. a toddler meal, pudding, yogurt

Cashew challenge: cashew oat cookies are offered for the blinded doses. The open dose is ground cashew combined with a previously eaten food e.g. a toddler meal, pudding, yogurt or whole cashew nuts for older children

*NOTE: your child will need to complete and pass the baked egg and/or baked milk challenge on the BAT 2 Study to progress to the loosely cooked egg and/or fresh milk challenge
